About

Doctormanette (frequently styled as Dr. Manette) was a prominent 1990s ska-punk and power pop quintet that emerged from the Chicago suburbs (specifically Elgin and West Dundee) before becoming a staple of the Champaign-Urbana and regional Midwest scenes. The band maintained deep ties to the Wisconsin underground, frequently performing at legendary Milwaukee venues like the Buffum House and Madison's O'Cayz Corral alongside local mainstays like The Benjamins. Distinguished from their peers by 'intelligent lyrics' and unusually sophisticated, written-out horn charts, their sound was often described as a high-energy fusion of Weezer-style power pop and MU330-inspired ska-core. They released their first 7-inch, 'Dew Unto Others,' in 1996, followed by two full-length albums on Chicago's Jump Up! Records: 'Everything Off-Beat' (1998) and 'The Same Thing Over & Over' (1999). Though the group disbanded around 2000, their catalog has been kept alive through several digital reissues and appearances on essential ska-punk compilations.
