Brand New Unit

About

Brand New Unit (often abbreviated as BNU) was a highly influential Canadian hardcore punk band formed in 1991 in Surrey, British Columbia. The band was known for their melodic yet aggressive sound, drawing inspiration from acts like 7 Seconds and Dag Nasty. They rose to prominence after winning the CITR-FM Shindig contest in 1992 and went on to release several critically acclaimed albums and EPs on prominent labels such as BYO Records and Burning Heart Records. Their discography includes notable releases like 'Under the Big Top' (1994), 'Diddly Squat' (1998), and a split with Minneapolis band Kill Sadie. BNU was a staple of the 1990s North American underground circuit, touring extensively and becoming a familiar name in the Milwaukee and Wisconsin punk scenes through frequent performances at legendary local venues like The Globe East. The band officially disbanded in 2000, though they reunited for occasional shows between 2010 and 2018. Following the deaths of founding members Gary Lavallee and Garnet Kulhavy in 2021, the band remains inactive.
