ANNA TIVEL
About
Anna Tivel was born in La Conner, Washington, and grew up in a musical household where she began playing the violin in first grade. She moved to Portland, Oregon, at age 18, initially finding her place in the local music scene as a fiddler for various groups, including the Shook Twins and the Nathaniel Talbot Quartet. Her career shifted toward songwriting after she picked up the guitar and began crafting "character-driven poems" that explore the lives of ordinary people. She released her debut album, Before Machines, in 2014 on the Portland-based label Fluff & Gravy Records. Since then, she has become a critical favorite, with NPR describing her as one of the "absolute favorite living songwriters." Her work is frequently compared to literary masters like Paul Simon and modern folk icons like Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker. Tivel has a significant connection to the Wisconsin music scene; her 2024 album Living Thing was produced in Eau Claire by Shane Leonard (who also produced her 2019 album The Question), and she frequently tours through Milwaukee, appearing at venues like the Vivarium.
